Collection: Gas Patio Heaters

Gas patio heaters keep a patio, deck or outdoor dining area usable on cool evenings. This collection includes freestanding flame-tower heaters from Lava Heat, mounted Bromic Tungsten and Platinum Smart-Heat gas heaters, and Dimplex DGR infrared gas heaters.

How to choose a gas patio heater

  • Natural gas or propane: Natural gas heaters connect to a fixed gas line, so there is no tank to change, and need a qualified installer. Propane heaters run from a tank; freestanding propane models can be moved around the patio. Many models are offered in both fuels; select the version that matches your supply.
  • Freestanding or mounted: Freestanding towers heat the area around the unit and need floor space. Wall- and ceiling-mounted heaters direct heat toward a seating zone and keep the floor clear.
  • Heat output and area: Compare the BTU rating on each product page. A larger seating area, or a windy, open site, needs more output or more than one heater.
  • Clearances: Each manufacturer sets minimum distances to ceilings, walls and furniture, and states whether a model may be used under a cover. Check the manual before you buy.

Gas patio heater FAQ

Is natural gas or propane better for a patio heater?

Natural gas suits a permanent spot with a gas line. Propane suits patios without a line, or when you want to move the heater.

Can I use a gas patio heater under a covered patio?

Only if the manufacturer rates that model for the space and you keep the stated ceiling and wall clearances. Check the manual for each model.

Can you use a gas patio heater in a garage?

No. Gas patio heaters are built for outdoor spaces with natural ventilation; Bromic, for example, says its gas heaters must not be used indoors. Burning gas in a garage, closed porch or other enclosed room can let carbon monoxide build up. For an enclosed space, choose an electric heater the manufacturer rates for that location, and follow its installation manual and local codes.

How do you turn on a gas patio heater?

It depends on the model, so follow the lighting steps in its manual. Freestanding propane heaters usually light by opening the tank valve, pushing in the control knob and pressing the igniter, then holding the knob until the pilot stays lit. Fixed heaters such as Bromic Tungsten and Platinum gas models run from a wall switch or Affinity controller instead. Never relight a heater if you smell gas.

How long does a propane tank last in a patio heater?

About 10 hours on high for a 40,000 BTU/hr heater. A full 20 lb propane tank holds roughly 430,000 BTU, so divide that by your heater's BTU rating on high to estimate run time; a lower setting lasts longer. Use the BTU figure from the product's specifications, and keep a spare tank stored away from the heater, never next to it.
