Description
This is the Broilmaster Premium P4X gas grill head on its own, for buyers who choose their own Broilmaster post or cart, or are replacing a worn head on an existing mounting. The P4X is Broilmaster's compact Premium head: heavy-duty cast aluminum with one stainless steel Bow Tie burner rated at up to 40,000 BTU, run from separate left and right controls, and 473 sq. in. of total cooking area. Ceramic briquets on a briquet rack and multi-level stainless steel cooking grids come standard.
The two-piece stainless steel rod grids (DPA112) adjust to two cooking levels, medium and high, and the folding Retract-A-Rack adds a warming level that folds away for large roasts. The briquets sit in a single even layer on the briquet rack above the burner, and the residue they collect burns off during warm-up. A push-button electronic ignitor (one AA battery) lights the burner, with a match-lighting hole on each side as a backup, and a heat indicator in the lid shows the temperature. The stainless smoker shutter and griddle that Broilmaster offers for its P3 heads are not listed for the P4. Choose natural gas (P4XN) or propane (P4X).
Plan ahead: the head needs a Broilmaster mounting, sold separately. Broilmaster states the P4X fits all Broilmaster mountings, including the black patio post (BL26P), stainless patio post (SS26P), black in-ground post (BL48G), stainless in-ground post (SS48G), stainless cart (PCB1) and black cart (DCB1); for a built-in island, ask us to confirm the correct built-in kit for a size 4 head before you order. The P4XF head is the same grill with Flare Buster ceramic flavor enhancers in place of briquets and is also sold ready-mounted on posts and carts, and the P3XF head gives 695 sq. in. of total cooking area.

Features
- Up to 40,000 BTU stainless Bow Tie burner: corner-to-corner heat for searing, with separate left and right controls for two-zone and indirect cooking.
- Ceramic briquets on a briquet rack: manage the burner's heat under the grids; residue burns off on the next warm-up, and briquets can be turned over to clean.
- 473 sq. in. of total cooking area: two-level stainless rod grids plus a folding Retract-A-Rack you can set for direct grilling or warming.
- Heavy-duty cast aluminum head: limited lifetime warranty against rust-through on the grill housing.
- Heat indicator in the lid: read the cooking temperature without lifting the lid.
- Fits all Broilmaster mountings: one head for a patio post, in-ground post or cart, so you can replace the head and keep the mounting.

Installation planning
- Mount the head on its Broilmaster post or cart following that mounting's own instructions; the head bolts down through its bottom casting. Choose the location first: at least 16" from combustible material at the sides and 18" at the back (fences, patio furniture and house walls count), and never under carports, covered porches, awnings or overhangs. Outdoor use only: never in a building, garage or other enclosed area, a recreational vehicle or a boat, and never where gasoline or other flammable vapors or liquids are stored or used.
- Gas: order the fuel you will use; the gas type is on the identification label on the control panel, and LP and natural gas grills cannot be interchanged. Natural gas heads have no pressure regulator, so the supply must be regulated before the grill and run at 7" water column manifold pressure, with an accessible shut-off valve installed by a licensed installer or your gas company. Propane heads run from the supplied hose and regulator (outlet no higher than 11" water column) on a standard 20-lb cylinder (no larger) with an overfill protection device (OPD) and Type 1 connection, kept upright with the valve at the top; the cylinder is not included. Pressure testing the supply: disconnect the grill and its shut-off valve for tests above 1/2 PSIG; close the shut-off valve to isolate the grill for tests at or below 1/2 PSIG. Leak-test every connection with soapy water, never a flame.
- First use: run on HI for 10 minutes with the lid open, then 10 minutes with the lid closed, to burn off manufacturing oils. To light: open the lid, turn the knob to OFF, turn on the gas, push and turn the knob to HI and hold the ignitor button until the burner lights (about 5 seconds); if it does not light, turn it off and wait 5 minutes before trying again. If the ignitor fails, the burner can be lit with a long wooden match through the lighter hole on either side of the grill. Preheat on HI for 5 minutes with the lid closed.
Care: After cooking, run on HI with the lid closed for about 10 minutes, or until it stops smoking (never more than 30), without opening the lid, then let it cool and wipe with a damp cloth. Keep the briquets in a single, even layer on the rack (place them, do not dump them in) and save leftover briquets; if they do not come clean during burn-off, let the grill cool, turn them over, and the residue burns off on the next warm-up. Brush the grids, empty the grease cup regularly, keep the air holes in the bottom clear and clean the heat indicator probe once a season. Inspect and clean the burner venturi tubes at least twice a year, and more often when spiders are active. Clean the exterior with mild detergent and hot water. Use only a grease cup or a noncombustible container such as an aluminum or tin can.
Warranty
Broilmaster limited warranty for Premium grills (owner's manual B102521): limited lifetime against rust-through on the cast aluminum grill housing (paint excluded), the stainless steel cooking grids, and select stainless steel components, including the Bow Tie burner; limited 5 years against rust-through on painted electro-galvanized steel components; limited 2 years against rust-through on porcelain-coated briquet racks and the stainless steel heat shield; limited 1 year on valves, knobs, ignitors, labels, hoses, fittings, grease cups, drip buckets and other parts and accessories, and on the paint of the aluminum grill head.
The warranty covers the original purchaser only and does not transfer. The grill must be installed by a qualified technician and operated and maintained as the manual describes, and warranty repairs must be done by a qualified gas appliance technician. Not covered: misuse, improper installation, unauthorized service, removal and reinstallation, and travel and diagnostic costs. Using lighter fluid voids the warranty. Keep your receipt: a claim goes through the installing dealer with proof of purchase, the model and serial numbers and the gas type. Full terms are in the owner's manual (B102521) and on Broilmaster's warranty page.
