Description

The Primo Oval XL 400 Ceramic Firebox (PG0177803) is a factory replacement for the ceramic fire box inside the Primo Oval XL 400 charcoal kamado grill (Primo part 177803). The fire box sits in the ceramic base and holds the lump charcoal; the cast iron charcoal grate sits at the bottom of it, so ash drops through to the base. Primo's parts page describes it simply: it "replaces the firebox in your Primo."

It fits the Primo Oval XL 400 PGCXLH, the XL in the All-In-One Oval XL 400 PGCXLC and the Jack Daniel's Edition Oval XL 400 PGCXLHJ, which Primo lists among the grills for its ceramic firebox. The XL has a 400 sq. in. main cooking grid of 18-1/2 x 25 in. (Primo XL spec sheet). For other sizes, see the Oval Junior firebox PG0177403; ask us for the Oval Large or Round firebox.

Plan ahead: Primo does not publish the firebox's dimensions, weight or a carton list, and it does not publish instructions for swapping it, so match the part number to your grill and ask us any fit questions before you order. Primo notes this item may have longer lead times and ships only within the USA. The cast iron charcoal grate, fire box divider and gasket are separate parts (below).

Features

  • Factory Primo part: Primo part 177803, made for the Oval XL 400 rather than a universal kamado fire box.
  • Holds the whole charcoal load: Primo's Quick Start Guide calls for a full fire box of charcoal for smoking and searing temperatures, and half a fire box for two-zone cooking.
  • Part of the XL fire set: Primo's Quick Start Guide lists the fire box with its bands, divider and fire grate; the matching XL charcoal grate PG0177807 and divider PG00334 are sold separately.
  • Ash drops through: the cast iron charcoal grate sits at the bottom of the fire box, and stirring the used charcoal with the ash tool drops the ash through it.
  • Lifetime ceramic coverage on the grill: Primo gives the original purchaser a limited lifetime warranty on all ceramic parts of the grill; a defective fire box is replaced through your dealer.

What's included

  • Primo Oval XL 400 ceramic fire box, part 177803

Primo does not publish a carton list for this part. Ask us to confirm whether the fire box bands or the charcoal grate are included before you order.

Installation planning

  • Confirm the model first: this fire box is for the Oval XL 400 only. Primo's warranty does not cover unauthorized parts, so match the part to your grill before ordering.
  • Warranty route: if the original fire box has a ceramic defect, contact your dealer with the model number, serial number and proof of purchase before buying a replacement; Primo replaces defective parts with equivalent parts, the purchaser pays shipping, and the old part must be disposed of once the replacement arrives.
  • Fitting: Primo does not publish fire box replacement instructions, so ask us or your dealer before you start. Afterward, Primo's warranty asks owners to check and tighten the band bolts several times a season and after each high-heat cook.
  • Placement of the grill: Primo asks for 12 in. of space behind the XL so the lid can open fully, and at least 2 in. around the outside of the grill.
  • Fuel and lighting: use only natural lump charcoal, lit with a fire starter cube or two, a chimney or an electric starter with the dome open. Never use lighter fluid; Primo says it is absorbed by the ceramics and gives a fuel taste to food.
  • Reusing charcoal: Primo says charcoal can be relit 2-3 times; stir the used charcoal with the ash tool so the ash drops through the grate, and add about 30% new charcoal before building a new mound.

Care: Clean the ash from the cast iron grate to prevent buildup, clean the cooking grates after each use, and check and tighten the band bolts several times a season and after high-heat cooks (Primo warranty maintenance).

Warranty

Primo Ceramic Grills gives the original purchaser of the grill a limited lifetime warranty on all ceramic parts, a limited 5-year rust-through warranty on metal parts other than cast iron, a limited 1-year rust-through warranty on cast iron parts and on all other parts and accessories unless stated otherwise, and a limited 30-day warranty on felt gaskets and thermometers. Primo's warranty page does not state a separate term for a fire box bought as a replacement part; ask us to confirm the coverage before you order.

Primo's conditions: coverage is for the original purchaser; the product must be installed according to Primo's instructions; keep a bill of sale or payment record. Replacement parts ship at the purchaser's expense. Not covered: damage from use, misuse, improper installation or storage, unauthorized service or parts, lack of maintenance (including not removing ash from cast iron grates and not checking and tightening bolts several times a season), removal and reinstallation, service calls, labor, travel, diagnostic and freight charges. Claims go through your dealer with the model number and proof of purchase, or through Primo's online warranty claim form; international claims are not accepted. Full terms are on Primo's warranty and parts page.
