Description

The Primo Electric Charcoal Starter (PGEFIRE) is Primo's plug-in lighter for natural lump charcoal. Primo says to "plug in the Electric Charcoal Starter to get your grill to desired temperature in minutes," and its product brochure adds that the high heat from the starter "lights lump charcoal in a matter of minutes." It replaces lighter fluid, which Primo says must never be used in its ceramic grills.

Primo lists it for every Primo charcoal grill: the Oval Junior 200, Oval Large 300, Oval XL 400, Jack Daniel's Edition XL, Oval XXL 500 and Round, including the All-In-One versions. Pair it with Primo natural lump charcoal, or see the rest of our Primo collection.

Plan ahead: the starter plugs in, so you need a power outlet within reach of the grill. Primo does not publish its wattage, voltage, cord length, dimensions, weight or material, and it publishes no separate instructions for it, so ask us any of those questions before you order. Primo's owner's manual says to monitor an electric fire starter closely while it lights the charcoal.

Features

  • Lights lump charcoal in minutes: Primo's brochure says the starter's high heat lights lump charcoal in a matter of minutes.
  • No lighter fluid: Primo says lighter fluid is absorbed by the ceramics, gives food a fuel taste and voids the warranty; an electric starter is one of the lighting methods Primo approves.
  • Fits every Primo size: Primo lists it for the Junior, Large, XL, XL Jack Daniel's Edition, XXL and Round charcoal grills.
  • Plug-in operation: Primo's instruction is simply to plug it in to bring the grill up to temperature in minutes.
  • Same lighting routine as the manual: fill the fire box, light with the dome open, and wait for embers before setting the vents (Primo Quick Start Guide).

Installation planning

  • Power: the starter plugs in, so plan for an outlet within reach of the grill. Primo does not publish the electrical rating or cord length; ask us before you order.
  • Fuel: use only 100% natural lump charcoal. Use a full fire box for smoking and searing temperatures and half a fire box for two-zone cooking (Primo Quick Start Guide).
  • Lighting: light the charcoal with the dome open, then wait 5-10 minutes for embers to form before closing the dome and setting the vents (Primo Quick Start Guide). Primo's owner's manual says an electric fire starter should be monitored closely.
  • Never use lighter fluid or any other combustible liquid: Primo says it is absorbed by the ceramics, gives food a fuel taste and voids the warranty.
  • Grill placement: Primo grills are for outdoor use only, in an area with adequate clearance for ventilation and clear of hanging limbs and other flammable objects (Primo owner's manual).
  • Reusing charcoal: Primo says charcoal can be relit 2-3 times; stir the used charcoal with the ash tool so the ash drops through the fire grate, and add about 30% new charcoal before you light it again.

Warranty

Primo Ceramic Grills gives the original purchaser a limited 1-year warranty against rust-through on all other parts and accessories (unless specified), alongside its limited lifetime warranty on ceramic parts, limited 5-year rust-through warranty on metal parts other than cast iron, limited 1-year rust-through warranty on cast iron parts and limited 30-day warranty on felt gaskets and thermometers. Primo's warranty page does not name electrical items or this starter separately, so ask us to confirm the coverage before you order.
