Description

The Primo Grill Controller (PGPLUS), which Primo calls the Primo Plus, is a Wi-Fi fan controller for Primo ceramic charcoal grills. It pairs with the Primo Grill Life app so you can monitor and control the grill from your phone. Primo includes the Wi-Fi enabled fan control, a grill temperature probe and two meat probes. Primo's brochure sums it up: set timers, monitor the temperature and save your favorite settings from previous cooks from your phone.

Primo lists it for the Oval Junior 200, Oval Large 300, Oval XL 400, XL 400 Jack Daniel's Edition, Oval XXL 500 and Round charcoal grills. You can also browse our Primo collection.

Plan ahead: the controller runs on USB-C power from a wall charger (Primo suggests a 1 to 2 A smartphone charger) and needs a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network with internet access. Primo recommends setting it up in advance and running a dry test of about two hours before your first cook. Primo does not publish the controller's dimensions, temperature range or how the fan mounts on each grill, so ask us any fit questions first.

Features

  • Phone control through Primo Grill Life: set a pit target, high and low alarms and a fan override, and watch the pit and food probe readings on one status screen.
  • Three probes in the box: one grill temperature probe and two meat probes, each with its own target temperature, alarm and nickname in the app.
  • Fan control to a pit target: the Wi-Fi enabled fan control works to the pit target you set, and choosing your smoker type in the app tunes the controller's algorithms to your grill.
  • Fuel and fault alarms: Primo suggests a low alarm around 200°F to catch charcoal running out and a high alarm at least 50°F above target to catch problems like a wide-open vent; the alarms scale when you change the target.
  • Status light and beeps: the controller shows its Wi-Fi, cloud or Bluetooth mode by color, blinks yellow for probe alerts such as lid open or food ready, and beeps on connection, errors and alerts.
  • Firmware updates: Primo releases updates one or two times a quarter, approved in the app; an update takes about 3 minutes.

Installation planning

  • Power: place the controller near a power outlet and within range of your Wi-Fi. It runs on USB-C from a wall charger; keep it on stable power during firmware updates.
  • Network: you need a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network with internet access. In the app, pick the detected controller, choose your 2.4 GHz network (refresh after about 5 seconds if it does not appear) and enter the password. Once online it breathes green and chirps; white then orange usually means a wrong Wi-Fi password.
  • App: install Primo Grill Life, accept the Bluetooth, Location Services and push notification permissions, and sign in with a social login or an email account.
  • Smoker preferences: choose your smoker type, then set a pit target and alarm thresholds (Primo suggests a low alarm around 200°F and a high alarm at least 50°F above target).
  • Dry run: Primo recommends setting up in advance and running a dry test of about two hours before your first cook.
  • Firmware: updates take about 3 minutes; keep the app open and do not remove power. Primo suggests doing them indoors, for example on the kitchen bench, in good Wi-Fi range.
  • Grill fuel: Primo grills burn only natural lump charcoal; never use lighter fluid or other combustible liquids, which Primo says the ceramic absorbs.

Care: Primo does not publish separate care steps for the controller or probes; ask us. Primo's warranty maintenance for the grill asks you to remove ash from the cast iron grate, clean the cooking grates after each use, and check and tighten the band bolts several times a season and after each high-heat cook.

Warranty

Primo Ceramic Grills gives the original purchaser a limited lifetime warranty on all ceramic parts, a limited 5-year rust-through warranty on metal parts other than cast iron, a limited 1-year rust-through warranty on cast iron parts and on all other parts and accessories unless stated otherwise, and a limited 30-day warranty on felt gaskets and thermometers. Primo's warranty page does not state a separate term for the Primo Plus controller or its probes; ask us to confirm the coverage before you order.

Primo's conditions: coverage is for the original purchaser; the product must be installed according to Primo's instructions; keep a bill of sale or payment record. Replacement parts ship at the purchaser's expense, and the existing part must be disposed of once the replacement arrives. Not covered: rust, fading, surface blemishes and oxidation unless they cause the part to fail; damage from use, misuse, improper installation or storage; unauthorized service or parts; lack of maintenance (including not removing ash from cast iron grates and not checking and tightening bolts several times a season); removal and reinstallation, service calls, labor, travel, diagnostic and freight charges. Claims go through your dealer with the model number, serial number and proof of purchase, or through Primo's online warranty claim form; international claims are not accepted. Full terms are on Primo's warranty and parts page.
