Description

The Primo Half-Moon Cast Iron Searing Grate for Oval XL (PG00361) is the X-Large size of Primo's half-moon cast iron grate. Primo says it is made for searing meats and locking in the juices at high temperatures, and that the cast iron gives higher heat retention, more even heat distribution and faster cooking times.

This listing is the X-Large size, for the Primo Oval XL 400 PGCXLH, the XL in the All-In-One Oval XL 400 PGCXLC and the Jack Daniel's Edition Oval XL 400 PGCXLHJ: Primo lists the grate for the XL and the XL Jack Daniel's Edition. Primo also makes it for the Junior, Large and XXL; we carry the Large half-moon cast iron searing grate PG00364 and the Junior half-moon cast iron searing grate PG00363. For a whole-grill griddle on the XL, see the X-Large griddle PGXLG, or browse our Primo collection.

Plan ahead: Primo does not publish the grate's dimensions, weight or seasoning state, so ask us if you need them before you order.

Primo does not publish a carton list for this part. Ask us to confirm the contents before you order.

Installation planning

  • Fit: this grate is the X-Large size; for other Primo grills choose the grate in your grill's size. Primo's warranty does not cover unauthorized parts.
  • Setup: Primo does not publish written instructions for the half-moon searing grate, so ask us before your first cook.
  • Searing heat: Primo's owner's manual gives searing temperatures of 500°F to 550°F; for high-heat searing it says to let the grill reach about 500°F to 550°F, then close the vents to about 1 in. Its steak method grills 3 minutes, flips for 3 more minutes, then closes the top and bottom vents to finish to the doneness you want.
  • Placement of the grill: Primo's XL spec sheet asks for 12 in. of space behind the grill so the dome can open fully, and at least 2 in. around the outside of the grill.
  • Fuel and lighting: use only natural lump charcoal, lit with a fire starter cube or two, a chimney or an electric starter with the dome open. Never use lighter fluid or any other combustible liquid; Primo says the ceramic absorbs it.
  • Temperature: Primo's Quick Start Guide has you set the draft door and fine-tune with the top vent in 1/4 in. steps, closing the top vent to one-third open when you are 25°F from your target; it notes it is easy to raise the temperature but very difficult to lower it.

Care: Primo's owner's manual says the grill is self-cleaning: heat it to around 500°F to burn off food and debris. Primo's warranty maintenance asks you to remove ash from the cast iron grate, clean the cooking grates and cast iron cooking surfaces after each use, and check and tighten the band bolts several times a season and after each high-heat cook.

Warranty

Primo Ceramic Grills gives the original purchaser of the grill a limited lifetime warranty on all ceramic parts, a limited 5-year rust-through warranty on metal parts other than cast iron, a limited 1-year rust-through warranty on cast iron parts and on all other parts and accessories unless stated otherwise, and a limited 30-day warranty on felt gaskets and thermometers. The searing grate is a cast iron part, so Primo's limited 1-year rust-through warranty on cast iron parts applies.

Primo's conditions: coverage is for the original purchaser; the product must be installed according to Primo's instructions; keep a bill of sale or payment record. Replacement parts ship at the purchaser's expense, and the existing part must be disposed of once the replacement arrives. Not covered: rust, fading, surface blemishes and oxidation unless they cause the part to fail; damage from use, misuse, improper installation or storage; unauthorized service or parts; lack of maintenance (including not removing ash from cast iron grates, not cleaning cooking grates and cast iron cooking surfaces after each use, and not checking and tightening bolts several times a season); removal and reinstallation, service calls, labor, travel, diagnostic and freight charges. Claims go through your dealer with the model number, serial number and proof of purchase, or through Primo's online warranty claim form; international claims are not accepted. Full terms are on Primo's warranty and parts page.
