Description

The Primo Junior Griddle (PGJRG) is Primo's griddle in the Junior size, made for the Primo Oval Junior 200 ceramic charcoal kamado grill. Primo says it turns your entire Primo into the smooth cooking surface of a griddle while keeping the smoky flavor of a charcoal grill, for burgers, fajitas and pancakes. The Primo shop lists it as a stainless steel griddle.

Primo's brochure says the griddle includes an interchangeable center grill grate, a solid insert and a removal key, and Primo's product page says the open center lets you control airflow while you cook and carries the Primo logo on the cut-out. It fits the Primo Oval Junior 200 PGCJRH and the Junior in the All-In-One Oval Junior 200 PGCJRC: Primo lists the griddle for the Junior Charcoal grill, and the Primo shop sells it as the Junior size. The Junior has 210 sq. in. of main cooking area on a 13-1/2 x 18-1/2 in. grid (Primo Junior spec sheet). For other sizes, see the X-Large griddle PGXLG and the Round griddle PGRG; for a half-grill cast iron option on the Junior, see the half-moon cast iron griddle PG00362, or browse our Primo collection.

Plan ahead: the griddle sits on the Junior's own cooking grates turned upside down, with the heat deflector plates and racks taken out. Season it before first use (steps below). Primo notes that rapid temperature changes can make the griddle warp until its temperature evens out. Primo does not publish the griddle's dimensions or weight.

Installation planning

  • Confirm the size first: PGJRG is the Junior griddle for the Primo Oval Junior 200. Primo's warranty does not cover unauthorized parts, so match it to your grill before ordering.
  • Installing on an oval Primo (Primo instructions PG1000574): remove the heat deflector plates and racks, install the cooking grates upside down, then set the griddle on the grates.
  • Seasoning before first use: clean the griddle with soap and water to remove manufacturing and shipping debris. Preheat it on the grill with the bottom door and lid open for 10 to 15 minutes, until the top browns. Using tongs or heat-resistant gloves, wipe on a very thin layer of oil with paper towels (Primo suggests canola, vegetable, olive or flax oil, or shortening; a thick layer causes chipping and sticky buildup later) and let it cool. Reheat it on the grill for about 30 minutes, until it blackens and stops smoking. Repeat the oil and heat steps 3 to 4 times, until the plate is dark brown, then, once it has cooled slightly, wipe on a final thin layer of oil to protect it from oxidation.
  • Surface rust: Primo ships the griddle with a light oil coating and says rust from shipping or humidity is normal; seasoning removes it.
  • Warping: rapid changes in temperature may cause the griddle to warp; Primo says this is expected and the griddle returns to shape once its temperature stabilizes.
  • Placement of the grill: Primo's Junior spec sheet asks for 10 in. of space behind the grill so the lid can open fully, and at least 2 in. around the outside of the grill.
  • Fuel and lighting: use only natural lump charcoal, lit with a fire starter cube or two, a chimney or an electric starter with the dome open. Never use lighter fluid or any other combustible liquid; Primo says the ceramic absorbs it.
  • Temperature: Primo's Quick Start Guide has you set the draft door and fine-tune with the top vent in 1/4 in. steps, closing the top vent to one-third open when you are 25°F from your target; it notes it is easy to raise the temperature but very difficult to lower it.

Care: Primo's seasoning steps end with a thin layer of oil to protect the griddle against oxidation. Primo's warranty maintenance asks you to remove ash from the cast iron grate, clean the cooking grates and cast iron surfaces after each use, and check and tighten the band bolts several times a season and after each high-heat cook.

Warranty

Primo Ceramic Grills gives the original purchaser of the grill a limited lifetime warranty on all ceramic parts, a limited 5-year rust-through warranty on metal parts other than cast iron, a limited 1-year rust-through warranty on cast iron parts and on all other parts and accessories unless stated otherwise, and a limited 30-day warranty on felt gaskets and thermometers. Primo's warranty page does not state a separate term for the griddle, so the general term for parts and accessories applies unless Primo states otherwise; ask us to confirm the coverage before you order.

Primo's conditions: coverage is for the original purchaser; the product must be installed according to Primo's instructions; keep a bill of sale or payment record. Replacement parts ship at the purchaser's expense, and the existing part must be disposed of once the replacement arrives. Not covered: rust, fading, surface blemishes and oxidation unless they cause the part to fail; damage from use, misuse, improper installation or storage; unauthorized service or parts; lack of maintenance (including not removing ash from cast iron grates and not checking and tightening bolts several times a season); removal and reinstallation, service calls, labor, travel, diagnostic and freight charges. Claims go through your dealer with the model number, serial number and proof of purchase, or through Primo's online warranty claim form; international claims are not accepted. Full terms are on Primo's warranty and parts page.
